My Top 3 Songs – October 2010

fripSide - future gazer

October teemed with great new songs so it was very hard choosing the top 3 this time. I had been contemplating whom to give the last spot for quite some time and in the end I opted to base my decision on the PV of one of the songs in my narrow selection.

fripSide – future gazer

The last spot has gone to fripSide’s latest single’s title song “future gazer”, the opening theme from To Aru Kagaku no Railgun OVA. As expected of fripSide, the song is upbeat and has a catchy melody; composed, arranged and written by fripSide’s man for everything Yaginuma Satoshi. The PV gives off a rather mysterious atmosphere as it features pyramids in the background, crypt passages, and Egyptian alleys. The whole PV has been recorded in Egypt as you can see in the making-of, which came on the DVD bundled with the limited edition.

Houkago Tea Time – Tenshi ni Fureta yo

Houkago Tea Time - Tenshi ni Fureta yo

This K-ON song has absolutely wonderful, heart-warming lyrics, which is really the best thing about it. Music-wise, it’s not as good as other HTT songs, but emotionally-wise, it’s deep. My eyes sweat when they played in the last episode.

Lyrics translation: (courtesy of Atashi)

Hey, for the pieces of my memories
If I save them as a new file
A “treasure” is exactly what it is

Yeah, I spent my time
To fill up the space in my heart
Every single day was a throbbing color

The uniform I’m used to and my indoor shoes-
The doodles on the whiteboard-
I think I have to leave them
At the entrance to tomorrow

But I was able to meet a wonderful angel!
Graduation isn’t the end
Because we’ll still be friends from now on
The photos of us together-
Our matching keychains-
Are shining forever
I’ll always thank you for your smile

Hey, the sakura trees
Seem to have grown a little, too
Even if it was at an invisible, slow speed

Surely that sky was watching
When I tripped again and again
And yet I was still able to walk to the end

In the halls after school
The wings of musical notes spilled out lightly
If only we could stay like this
Until they pile up all soft and fluffy

But I touched a lovable angel!
I feel like saying “I’m back”
This place won’t change
My e-mailbox-
The calendar marked off with circles-
I thank the music
That gave me my encounter with a terrific dream

At the home station, on the riverbank
Even if we’re separated, let’s look up at the same sky
And sing in unison!

But I was able to meet a wonderful angel!
Graduation isn’t the end
Because we’ll still be friends from now on
If you say, “I love you lots”
I’ll reply, “I love you lots and lots”
I don’t have anything forgotten anymore
We’ll always be together for eternity

Sphere – MOON SIGNAL

Sphere - MOON SIGNAL

Finally, Sphere’s latest single title song, opening theme from a very intriguing anime Otome Youkai Zakuro, “MOON SIGNAL”. It’s probably the most enigmatic PV by Sphere so far since the atmosphere is very hard to grasp. At one moment you think it’s filled with anxiety and sadness, only to perceive how much it’s overflowing with love the very next moment. Speaking of the PV, if I were an anime/manga character thus got nosebleed under certain conditions, I’m sure I would have made a red pool by the end of the video. Particularly at 1:57, 2:23 2:54, 3:33, and 3:48, I would gush out gallons ^^

The other songs that I was choosing from were “Hiyoku no Hane” by eufonius (Yosuga no Sora OP), “irony” by ClariS (OreImo OP), “Kizuna Iro” by Lia (Fortune Arterial Akai Yakusoku OP), and “HELP!! -hell side-” by Taketatsu Ayana (MM! OP).
